From Local to This Land!

When we started Local nearly ten years ago, we did so out of a love of place. In this case, the place was the east end of Toronto. Now we invite you to investigate our new business, This Land. Also born out of a love of place, This Land will shine a light on Canada’s environment and share news about what this country’s many not for profit environmental organizations are doing to protect our natural spaces. This Land will help you be better informed and more involved and will tell you interesting stories about Canada along the way. This week is Canadian Environment Week and the perfect opportunity to introduce Local’s longtime readers and followers to This Land. For now, please follow This Land on Twitter to get a feel for how the news feed will work. We are happy to report that Local will hit the street again within the next week or two. We’ve missed you all!!! This issue captures some highlights from Canada 150. Visually it allows for a glimpse of warmer weather and captures the community spirit that poured into Canada’s 150 celebrations last year. Keep your eyes open, we’ll be at the Fox, the BBC, Mourguet, Cobalt Gallery and many other hot spots soon. Hope 2018 is off to a great start for you!

Hello Locals! Happy New Year! It’s been awhile since we had an issue on the street. In the Fall, a few events meant that we had to stop publishing for the time being. The plan had been to at least wrap up 2015 so this was a sudden turn of events and one that has taken a while to adjust to. We do hope to be back at some point down the road but at this point that potential date is unclear. In the meantime, we invite you to continue to stay in touch about local events and potential stories. We may be able to reinvent ourselves online in 2016. Basically we continue to explore the possibilities in case we can find a way to continue to bring you the stories you enjoyed reading and we enjoyed writing. In the meantime, all the best for 2016 and if you wish to hear our voice, the best place to find Local is on Twitter. We miss you and wish you all a fabulous 2016!

Summer is still here!!

What a Summer this one has been. Not sure about you but I have loved the Summer of 2015 – my only complaint is that it has absolutely flown by! I often complain of time passing quickly but honestly can’t recall four months to ever have blown by so fast. I guess its true what they say – time flies when you’re having fun but still!!! However, we decided to go with that flow and with the great weather and we put our Summer Issue out after the Pan Am Games excitement. We figured there had been a lot of distractions to start July and there was still LOTS of Summer time left. We’ve given you an issue that suggests many activities that can enhance your Summer – Cycling, Longboarding and Stand Up Paddleboarding. We’ve also pointed you to a bunch of beverages to enjoy after a fun work out or just because its a beautiful day. Oh, and by the way, I capitalize Summer because I believe the seasons deserve a capital – particularly a season this beautiful. Have fun and enjoy the issue and more importantly the drinks and activities :)!

Fall is in the air!!

Well it took awhile for most of us to come around to Fall this year but we hit the street with our Fall issue just before Thanksgiving weekend when most of us could not stay in denial any longer. Now a few weeks in with the issue, Fall is definitely here and I am getting my exercise raking leaves, bagging leaves, raking leaves, etc. etc. We are getting great response on our Fall issue and are happy you are enjoying it. Going to be a pretty Fall weekend to come and always a beautiful season in the east end of the city. Enjoy the Fall and enjoy this issue. We had fun pulling this one together for you. Slow Spring – enjoy the reading!

Well Spring seems to be taking its time to arrive – at least, Spring is here but the cool weather continues. It seems we are learning to live with less where the thermometer is concerned but at least we are enjoying a few days of sunshine. My plants sprung up about three inches yesterday!! They are clearly tired of waiting for heat to welcome them this Spring. We’re getting great feedback on this Green Good Food issue. Let me know what your favourite story is in this one. Early Spring Issue is out and about!

Our Green/Good Food issue hit the street yesterday! We managed to get about 1500 out there along Kingston Road and Queen Street – we still need to hit the Danforth where one of our featured stories lives! The Big Carrot takes centre stage in this issue as do the fantastic paintings and sculptures of local artist, Heather Gentleman. And there is so much more in this issue – reclaimed wood, great men’s fashion!, wishing wells, mustard and the Culinary Adventure Company – never a dull moment in this issue. So, we hope you can find your way to one. Good Friday kept us from completing our route along the Danforth and a few outlying areas but we will fill in the blanks asap. Have a Happy Easter everyone!!! We’ll see you in the parade if you are there! :)sarah
