So much talk of coyotes this year and today – my own close encounter, or more specifically, my dogs’ close encounter with two of these stunning creatures. And these two that I’ve seen twice now, truly are stunning. They arn’t the mangy, skinny coyotes you may have seen around. These two have thick winter coats, beautiful ruffs around their heads, gorgeous salt and pepper coloured coats – one lighter than the other. Today, my two dogs were actively involved with the coyotes – much to my chagrin. Fortunately they came out of it unscathed, my pup is now much wiser and won’t consider it such a game to follow their scent if there is a next time I hope. My elder dog stood her ground, I screamed and hollered and we all went back to the car (me and my two dogs, not the coyotes :)) none the worse for wear. Thank goodness. I won’t talk about where I was since quite frankly, I don’t want to be part of the media circus that has pursued these animals of late. We were in one of the more wild places in the City and in a place well-suited to coyotes. I wouldn’t want to jeopardize their home with media attention. However, one does remember that with the beauty of the wild, comes the Call of the Wild and the law of the jungle. My pup is a heavy little creature, sixty pounds plus, and today she learned that although a coyote might smell like fun to her, to him she smells like a snack and had best watch her behind and keep her distance.
