Arriving in Canada in 1997, Sjon de Groot was employed in the pharmaceutical sector for many years, until he made the choice to devote himself fully to pursuing his life-long dream of just being an artist.
He was trained by Geoffrey and Michael Armstrong and completed many commissions for businesses and private collectors in South Africa. He comes from a long line of Dutch artists.
Principally working in oil for his landscapes, he also experiments in ethereal mask-making, and the occasional watercolour. The work is bold and multi-dimensional, reflecting the tension of an expression of Canada by an African as he seeks colour and meaning in the landscape of his adopted home.
Sjon De Groot will be opening his studio to the public on Saturdays from 12:00pm – 5:00pm, exhibiting his private collection from July through October 2012. A private viewing can be arranged by appointment. Artwork is for sale.
